Course Description
The Nemeth Code is the special braille code used in mathematics and science. This two-part course offers exercises in both reading and writing Nemeth Code. Both parts are required if you plan to enroll in any Hadley mathematics course, except Doing It the Metric Way and Abacus. If you do not require written math skills, you may do only the reading portion.

This course consists of nine two-part lessons. Each lesson tests your reading and writing skills in the Nemeth Code.

Grade 2 braille reading and writing skills, ability to use cassette instruction, and braille writing equipment

Course Materials
One braille volume, two instruction cassettes for the reading exercises, and one cassette for the writing exercises. You are not required to return the braille text, but are asked to return all instruction cassettes.
Objectives And Content
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- read and write the basic arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions
- read and write simple algebra and geometry problems; read and write the Nemeth Code
Lesson 1 introduces the symbols for mathematical parentheses, numeric indicator, digits zero to nine, punctuation indicator, mathematical comma, dollar sign, decimal point, and cent sign.
Lesson 2 continues basic arithmetic with the plus sign, multiplication sign, equals sign, carried number indicator, and separation line.
Lesson 3 concludes basic arithmetic with the minus sign, percent sign, divided by sign, format for spatial division, divided into sign with separation line above, caret, and multipurpose indicator.
Lesson 4 is about fractions and introduces the simple fraction indicator, horizontal fraction line, cancellation indicator, spatial simple fraction line, general omission indicator, and omission sign.
Lesson 5 continues the study of fractions with the mixed number indicator, complex fraction indicator, complex fraction line, spatial complex fraction line, and diagonal or slash line.
Lesson 6 introduces the superscript indicator, baseline indicator, subscript indicator, degree sign, prime sign, double prime sign, and square root sign.
Lesson 7 introduces the symbols for is greater than, is less than, is not greater than, is not less than, is not equal to, ratio, proportion, and absolute value.
Lesson 8 introduces the symbols for opening and closing square brackets, opening and closing curly braces, is an element of, Greek letter pi, is greater than or equal to, is less than or equal to, and horizontal bar.
Lesson 9 introduces beginning geometric symbols for triangle, angle, square, is perpendicular to, is parallel to, and enlargement indicator.
