School personnel who encounter elementary school-aged children who are blind or visually impaired; not appropriate for certified orientation and mobility specialists

Course Description
Would you like to supplement the orientation and mobility (O&M) services that the blind or visually impaired child in your life receives? This course suggests many activities that can help elementary school-aged children independently explore their surroundings. This course won’t turn you into a certified O&M specialist, but it can help you select games and activities that reinforce the O&M skills children learn in elementary school.

Objectives and Content

After completing Lesson 1, you will be able to define and give examples of

  1. orientation
  2. mobility

After completing Lesson 2, you will be able to define and give examples of the following types of sensory skill training:

  1. auditory
  2. tactile
  3. olfactory
  4. proprioceptive
  5. kinesthetic
  6. residual vision

After completing Lesson 3, you will be able to suggest ways to further develop

  1. body image
  2. spatial concepts
  3. environmental concepts

After completing Lesson 4, you will be able to suggest ways to further develop a child’s

  1. gross motor skills
  2. fine motor skills
  3. discuss behavioral issues that emerge during this stage
  4. adopt basic safety guidelines

After completing Lesson 5, you will be able to

  1. modify a game, if necessary, for a chld with sensory impairments
  2. select instructional techniques that best meet the needs of the child
  3. select games that further enhance O&M skill development
