Course Description
Want to read braille visually? This course gives you the tools to communicate in writing with others who read braille. Its goal is to enable you to read and write uncontracted, or grade 1, braille. As an introductory course, it does not make you fully proficient in braille. To do so, additional study and practice are necessary.

Eight assignments are submitted to the instructor. Students also need to complete a pretest and a posttest.

Objectives

After completing Lesson 1, you will be able to

  1. briefly describe the history of braille
  2. describe the braille system of raised dots
  3. list the advantages of braille literacy for a person who is blind
  4. describe devices that are used to produce braille

After completing Lesson 2, you will be able to visually identify the letters of the alphabet in braille, individually and in words.

After completing Lesson 3, you will be able to

  1. correctly insert paper into the slate
  2. emboss with the slate and stylus

After completing Lesson 4, you will be able to

  1. identify the mechanics of the braillewriter
  2. describe how to emboss on the manual braillewriter

After completing Lesson 5, you will be able to

  1. emboss properly with the braillewriter (only if you are learning to braille on a braillewriter)
  2. write letters and words in braille

After completing Lesson 6, you will be able to

  1. write the capital letter sign to identify proper nouns and the beginning of a sentence
  2. write numbers in braille
  3. write the decimal and dollar sign when indicating dollar amounts

After completing Lesson 7, you will be able to read and write the following punctuation in braille

  1. period
  2. comma
  3. apostrophe
  4. question mark
  5. hyphen and dash

After completing Lesson 8, you will be able to read and write the following punctuation

  1. exclamation point
  2. parentheses
  3. colon and semicolon
  4. quotation marks
