Course Description
Are you considering a guide dog? This story-based course encourages you to think about becoming a guide dog user. If you are living or working with individuals who are considering a guide dog, this course will provide you with insight into the decision-making process so that you can better empathize with them. Weigh the benefits of companionship, and learn about the mutual dependence between yourself and a trusted canine partner. Be secure in the knowledge that you or the person you know has made the right decision.

After completing Lesson 1, the student will be able to

  1. describe some aspects of the guide dog lifestyle
  2. dispel some myths about guide dogs and their use

After completing Lesson 2, the student will be able to

  1. list the inherited behaviors and physical characteristics of successful guide dogs
  2. describe the training that leads to qualifying as a guide dog

After completing Lesson 3, the student will be able to

  1. evaluate programs and services
  2. explain how clients are evaluated

After completing Lesson 4, the student will be able to

  1. describe the handler-dog training process
  2. discuss the lifelong partnership

After completing Lesson 5, the student will be able to

  1. discuss the practical considerations of having a guide dog
  2. handle interactions with the general public
