Course Description
Do you work with clients who are ready to enter or reenter the world of work? Perhaps a client wants help advancing into a better position. This course examines the job-search process from the point of view of the person seeking employment, whether the person has never worked before or is looking for a better job. Unlike traditional courses about finding employment, it not only provides the basics of how to find employment, but also addresses specific strategies for job seekers who are visually impaired.

Objectives and Content

After completing Lesson 1, students will be able to

  1. discuss why people want to be employed
  2. identify interests and skills

After completing Lesson 2, students will be able to

  1. match interests and skills to careers
  2. research various occupations

After completing Lesson 3, students will be able to

  1. describe networking as a job search technique
  2. identify other job search strategies
  3. list job search services and organizations for visually impaired job seekers

After completing Lesson 4, students will be able to

  1. explain how to complete a job application
  2. list the elements of a good resume
  3. identify the features of a good cover letter

After completing Lesson 5, students will be able to

  1. explain how to prepare for the interview
  2. identify commonly asked interview questions
  3. describe the five-fingered approach to interviewing

After completing Lesson 6, students will be able to

  1. discuss the ADA and reasonable accommodation
  2. discuss when an individual might decide to disclose his or her visual impairment to a prospective employer
