Course Description
The Nemeth Code for Science and Mathematics includes all the symbols a braille user needs to engage in written math and science. This course introduces you to many of the basic Nemeth Code symbols. By learning the basics of the Nemeth Code, you can help students who are blind to develop mathematical skills that will serve them throughout their school years and beyond. The goal of this course is to read and braille the basic symbols of the Nemeth Code.

Prerequisite Skills
Successful completion of "Contracted Braille" or the ability to read and write contracted braille.

Overview
Twelve assignments are submitted to the instructor. Brailled assignments are produced on a braillewriter, slate and stylus, or direct-input computer program.

Objectives and Content

After completing Lesson 1, the student will be able to

  1. briefly explain how the Nemeth Code was developed
  2. explain how the Nemeth Code is used and produced

After completing Lesson 2, the student will be able to use

  1. Nemeth Code numerals and basic indicators
  2. the mathematical comma
  3. Roman numerals
  4. the decimal point and the dollar, pound sterling, cent, percent, and degree signs

After completing Lesson 3, the student will be able to use

  1. signs of operation in linear display
  2. signs of grouping

After completing Lesson 4, student will be able to use signs of comparison.

After completing Lesson 5, student will be able to use the Nemeth Code to read and write some basic, spatially displayed math problems.

After completing Lesson 6, student will be able to use the Nemeth Code to read and write

  1. the slash
  2. simple fractions, mixed numbers, and complex fractions
  3. spatially displayed fractions

After completing Lesson 7, student will be able to

  1. read and braille letters as mathematical symbols
  2. indicate superscript, subscript, and baseline levels

After completing Lesson 8, student will be able to use the Nemeth Code to read and braille

  1. omissions
  2. shapes

After completing Lesson 9, student will be able to use the Nemeth Code to read and braille

  1. carried numbers
  2. long division

After completing Lesson 10, student will be able to

  1. follow some basic rules for the use and nonuse of contractions and short-form words in the Nemeth Code
  2. use abbreviations

After completing Lesson 11, student will be able to use the cancellation indicators for

  1. regrouping (borrowing) in subtraction
  2. reducing fractions

After completing Lesson 12, student will be able to use the Nemeth Code to read and braille

  1. modifiers
  2. radicals
  3. set notation
