Joyeux Anniversaire à Louis Braille (Happy Birthday to Louis Braille)

2009 marks the 200th birthday of Louis Braille, who was born in Coupvray, France and lost his sight as a child after an accident in his father’s shop. After years of diligent study at a school for the blind in Paris, Monsieur Braille developed the touch system of raised dots that would later bear his name.

In July, Hadley is hosting a traveling Louis Braille Bicentennial Exhibit created by National Braille Press. The exhibit, in both print and braille, illustrates the life of Louis Braille and the history of braille. Hadley planned several events around this colorful and informative exhibit.

On July 13, Hadley partnered with the French Institute of the North Shore to host a Bastille Day and Louis Braille Birthday Celebration in the school’s new sensory garden. More than 80 people enjoyed French wine, food and live music under a lovely summer evening sky.

On July 14, Hadley collaborated with The Book Stall at Chestnut Court for a book signing by Michael Mellor, author of Louis Braille: A Touch of Genius.

Hadley has opened its doors to the public during July so that others may view the Louis Braille Bicentennial Exhibit. Come visit us and explore the life of this exemplary Frenchman!
