Braille Institute of America
For 90 years, Braille Institute of America has worked to eliminate barriers to a fulfilling life caused by blindness and severe sight loss. Private contributions and more than 3,600 skilled volunteers allow us to offer classes, training and a wide variety of other services and activities free of charge. We serve Central and Southern California through five regional centers, and our Mobile Solutions van brings help and hope to people in outlying areas.

The 1st Touch Foundation is
a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding the approximate 3000 patients
in the United States with Leber' congenital amaurosis (LCA). Our effort is called
Project 3000, and it is the ambitious plan to identify and provide genetic testing
for every LCA patient in the nation. We raise awareness at a variety of events
throughout the country. The eventual goal is to further scientific understanding
of LCA and advance the prospects for treatment and ultimately a cure. We provide
genetic testing to every LCA patient regardless of their ability to pay. For
those families and patients who lack health insurance, philanthropic donations
are used to reduce the cost of testing. We also provide updates on new LCA related
findings as the information becomes available.
